One of them most common questions we are asked in this business are what consumers can do to prevent getting ripped off by fly-by-night roofing companies. Local news broadcasts are filled with stories of people being taken advantage of. The best defense a consumer has is to arm themselves and be knowledgeable about the deceiving tricks these bandits will try and use to swindle unsuspecting homeowners out of thousands of dollars. If you’re looking for homes for sale in Oklahoma or need to repair an existing roof; then read on.

Charging for estimates: When damaging storms blow through your area, there are bound to be various roofing companies springing from nowhere offering to inspect for damage to your roof. These companies will solicit, often times door to door, to inspect your roof for damage.

These companies will play up damages, talk up the “invisible damage”, and suggest absurd repairs. Often time, if a homeowner refuses their services, they will attempt to charge for the damage estimate—but don’t let them.

Reputable roofing companies offer free estimates to customers as a way of securing business. Unless you signed a document that states you will pay for the estimate unless services are rendered, refuse to pay and contact your local Better Business Bureau.

High Pressure Sales: Established roofers know that customers will get multiple estimates to ensure the lowest bid possible, but these fly-by-night roofers don’t want that. They are only interested in getting their contract signed immediately. They will dangle discounts, add-ins, and extended warranties in front of you if you promise to sign tonight.

These sales men are rats. Throw some rat bait their way by telling them you will be happy to sign the contract once you have two more written estimates to compare to. Ask them to call you in two days once you have done your homework. Most of the time, the unrepeatable roofers will never call back because you are not worth the time. Smart consumers like this will cause too many problems with their business strategy.

Don’t be fooled by warranties: Warranties are not worth the paper they are written on if the company goes out of business. Fly by night roofers will promise extraordinary warranties that almost sound too good to be true—because they are. When a problem with their work arises, you will discover that the company has closed up shop and you have nowhere to turn. Choose a company with a solid reputation and quality references.

No Physical Office: While roofing companies may not always have the most glamorous offices, quality roofers will almost always have a physical presence and permanent address. This is where their office staff and other business affairs are handled. If the roofer in questions cannot provide you with a tangible location (no PO Boxes), be wary.

Getting a roof does not have to be a painstaking process. Just educate yourself, find an established local roofer, and check their references. Doing these few simple things will keep you from being another one of those people on the local newscast.
